Our Story
Frankenstein Builders Supply was founded in 1912 by J.H. DeWalt who had returned from a trip in the western part of the United States. He stopped in Zelienople before heading back to his home in West Freedom Pennsylvania. During his visit, he met and married his wife and made his home in Zelienople Pa. The original company sold and delivered coal, sand, cement, gravel, and other construction products.
John Frankenstein returning from deployment in World War II (Army) who grew up in the Zelienople area met and married Mr. DeWalts daughter. He quickly joined the business and worked with Mr. DeWalt eventually becoming owner and changing the name in 1950 to Frankenstein Builders Supply.
Mr. Altemus became a partner in the business in the early 1950s. Mr. Altemus was also a World War II (Marine) veteran of the pacific and met and married Mr. Frankenstein sister. Under their combined leadership the company expanded and grew over the next 50 years.
Mr. Frankenstein and Mr. Altemus both worked well into their 80s and retired in 2010. The company today continues to be led by both families and serves the Zelienople and surrounding communities.
